The C30 Story

One of the great aviation pioneers of the early 20th century, Gabriel Voisin begun producing luxury, aerodynamic-efficient automobiles following the closure of his aviation company post-First World War. His influence continued in automotive design, especially passenger-car aerodynamics, as embodied in this C30.

Codenamed ‘Brick’, the C30 model was commissioned in 1937. It was powered by the 3.6-litre six-cylinder Graham engine mated to a 3-speed and reverse gearbox with overdrive. The C30 had a welded steel Voisin chassis with load bearing boxed floor, Voisin steering with the box placed in front of the axle, half-elliptic leaf springs in Voisin sliding trunnions, hydraulic brakes on all four wheels and hydraulic shock absorbers, rear fuel tank, fuel feed by mechanical pump, and a dry multi-plate clutch.

Approximately 30 examples were briefly produced before the outbreak of the Second World War and are recognised as the last Voisin automobiles.

A Unique Example

This example was first registered on 27th June 1939 as ‘7405 RM 6’, then a Parisian number, and is believed to be one of only five C30’s to still be in existence and the only one with this unique ‘aero’ bodywork from new. The coachbuilder is unknown, but it is unique and designed in line with the Voisin ‘aero’ theme. Following another Parisian registration as ‘8673 DR 75’ on 24th March 1955, it was imported from France into Switzerland in October 1963 by Pierre Strinati and retained by him until it was sold with the remaining cars from his collection earlier this year.

The car underwent a restoration in December 1984, which included a respray in BMW Savana Beige (believed to have originally been painted in dark green), the headlining retrimmed, the chrome re-plated, the radiator shell repaired and the roof Plexiglass windows replaced.

With its new owner, the Voisin has recently been carefully recommissioned by Trofeo Cars, rather than restored.
