Porsche returned to the glory of the old days with the 996 GT3 R, built in a total of 61 units. At the GT3 R’s first race, the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans, two prototypes emphatically claimed first and second place in the LMGT class. The 996’s domination ensued in 2000 with GT3 R’s claiming a clean sweep on the podium, followed by the same result with the GT3 RS in 2001, 2002, and the seasons to come. The 996 GT3 R, the later 996 GT3 RS and - in its last evolution - the GT3 RSR, made the following years the most successful GT racing years in Porsche’s history.
Chassis #098 boasts a stellar race history, including the British GT Championship, the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) and the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). The car’s livery has recently been restored to that of its final ALMS entry - the 2004 12 Hours of Sebring.
One of the highly sought after early GT3 R versions (‘ZYS’ chassis code signifying an early 2000 example), #098 was originally sold to Mr. Steven Donovan, CEO of Counter Solutions. It started its racing life the 2000 British GT Championship with the up and coming, privately owned British team, PK Sport. Competing with the race number #42, it collected three class wins and numerous other podiums.
The following year, PK Sport decided to move up a level and apply for the 24 Hours of Daytona. Unfortunately though, it resulted in a DNF due to an accident. The remainder of the 2001 season yielded enormous success as #098 entered five out of seven races during the inaugural European Le Mans Series (ELMS) season with PK Sport emerging as winners of the team championship.
The team were unable to defend their title due to the cancellation of the ELMS for 2002. However, #098 competed in various other GT races, such as the 12 Hours of Sebring, two British GT rounds, and a 24 Hours of Le Mans test – #098 was the reserve car for PK Sport’s Le Mans race entry.
#098 raced in all nine rounds of the 2003 American Le Mans Series (ALMS), in addition to winning the Mil Milhas Brasilieras (Interlagos 100 miles).
After PK Sport’s withdrawal of #098 from the ALMS in 2004, it was entered into the PCGB Porsche Open championship with Mike Johnson behind the wheel. Throughout 2007 and 2008, it was dominant across a series of Porsche Open races and a few other invitational events, claiming multiple wins and podiums.
